What is bouldering?
Things to know as a bouldering newbie
Bouldering is a climbing sport in which you try and climb 'boulders' without the help of ropes. A boulder can be an actual rock that is found outside, but it can also be an artificial rock wall in an indoor gym. Each boulder route has a distinct start and finish, and you rely on your technique and strength to complete the route by reaching the finish. There are different difficulty levels per route, so there's always something for everybody. For indoor bouldering, which is what we do with the ABC, you don't need more than free-fitting gym clothes! Bouldering shoes are highly recommend, but those can be rented for a small fee at the gym. Chalk, to keep your hands dry which improves your grip, is also nice but you can usually borrow some from your fellow ABCers. Our usual climbing gym is "Beest Boulders - Het Lab", near Amsterdam Sloterdijk station.
